Cara Cepat Hamil - Muhammad Amin, I don't think people are arguing that people's cultures and religious beliefs shouldn't be respected (with the exception of those who are condemning religion across the board-- atheist intolerance is still intolerance, people!). The issue here is that, on a show where *nothing* is respected, should an exception be made for Islam because the network fears violent reprisals?

The more I think about it, the more I suspect that the reason for this double standard is that, while many Westerners are aware that extremists of any religion will do crazy things, too many Westerners assume that extremist Islamic views *are* the mainstream in Islam. That is, while a Christian ranting against Dan Brown will not get much attention because Christians aren't generally perceived to be violent, a Muslim ranting against South Park *will* get a lot of attention because Westerners are more likely to assume that person is dangerous.

There is no question of freedom of speech here.

There should be difference between freedom of speech and and freedom to insult a particular group/religion. For example, we know that african americans in general dont like to be called by "N" word so we should always respect that. Similarly if muslims dont want their prophet to be depicted in cartoons, they should also be respected. Why everybody in media wants to make big deal out of that?
